Ecuador AQUACULTURE MARKET

Ecuador has a big influence in global aquaculture and it’s an important part of the country’s economy. It is the world’s largest producer of farmed white shrimp (30% of world exports). And the tilapia and catfish farming are also growing steadily.
As the scale of farming gets bigger, there’s a sudden increase in the demand for high-quality feed. Specialized shrimp feed with high-quality protein and amino acids, as well as nutritionally balanced fish feed, have become mainstream. This has also driven the development of the local feed industry.
Although the industrial foundation is good, Ecuador’s aquaculture still faces many problems.
The shrimp farming industry has a history of 55 years, but only 30% of the farms use modern equipment. Traditional farming methods are not very efficient and have shortcomings in disease prevention and control, as well as feed technology. Climate anomalies make the coastal water temperature fluctuate, which not only slows down the growth of shrimp but also increases the mortality rate.
In the long run, Ecuador has great potential for aquaculture.
Now, the global demand for high-protein aquatic products is rising. To improve, Ecuador can invest in technology, better feed formulas, and infrastructure. By focusing on quality over quantity—using efficient, eco-friendly, tech-driven methods—it can strengthen its global position and upgrade both farming and feed industries.
CLIENT PROJECT DETAILS
This project will build a modern shrimp feed factory in an industrial park on the coast of Ecuador. The factory can produce 30,000 tons of feed each year. Its main goal is to supply high-quality, local feed to large shrimp farms and export companies.
Ecuador is the world’s biggest producer of farmed white shrimp, so there is a big need for good, local feed. This new shrimp feed mill will help clients stop relying on expensive imported feed and get a stable supply at a lower cost.
The factory will use fresh fish from the Pacific Ocean for animal protein. For plant protein, it will mainly use soybean meal grown locally. A special feature is that it also uses waste products from the banana industry, like banana stem powder. By adding these materials to the feed after fermentation, the project saves money and helps the environment by recycling waste.
The production line uses advanced technology to make sinking shrimp feed pellets. These pellets stay firm in the water for a long time, which reduces waste and keeps the water clean. The process also includes a precise coating system to add important nutrients like astaxanthin and probiotics. This helps the shrimp be healthier, have better digestion, and look more appealing with a nice color.

Once it is finished, this 5 t/h shrimp feed mill in Ecuador will provide a reliable source of high-quality feed.

And it will also support local aquaculture industry to grow in a more efficient and sustainable way.

CUSTOM-TAILORED SOLUTION
No two clients have exactly the same aquaculture feed production needs. In the aquaculture industry, different aquaculture species and fish/shrimp growth stages have different requirements for feed pellet size and nutritional composition.
RICHI always puts the real needs of clients first. Before providing a feed production solution, our engineers conducted a detailed consultation with the client:

Which process are you hoping to use: extrusion or pelleting?

What are the available energy sources? (Electric power capacity, steam boiler, natural gas or diesel, etc.)

What is the planned area for raw material and finished product storage? Do you need us to design the storage and conveying system?

Is it a new factory construction or utilizing an existing one? If using an existing facility, can you provide the floor plan?
Based on this information, we design a more tailored solution for the client, ensuring that shrimp feed equipment configuration and process design are fully aligned with clients’ specific needs, helping them resolve operational challenges.
As requested by the clients from the Ecuador, the equipment configuration of this 5-ton/hour shrimp feed mill is very complete.
The final shrimp feed mill includes the following sections:
Pre-processing System
This stage cleans, removes impurities, and pretreats raw materials. It uses three 10-ton temporary storage bins for feeding.
To prevent mold in the tropical climate, temperature and humidity sensors are installed.
01
Crushing System
Grinding fineness is controlled according to type, refining raw materials to a particle size suitable for shrimp feed.
The entire process is enclosed and dust-free, maintaining a clean workshop environment that meets local environmental standards.
02
Mixing System
Mechanical stirring achieves uniform mixing of raw materials.
A PLC system automatically adjusts the raw material ratio, allowing for rapid switching of feed formulas for different shrimp ages.
03
Extrusion System
Produces sinking feed with a pellet size of 1.5-8mm for all shrimp ages by changing molds.
During processing, the raw materials are fully cooked, resulting in dense feed pellets that are easily absorbed, have good water stability, and are not prone to disintegration.
04
Dryinging System
The feed undergoes multi-layer drying using 60-80℃ hot air, gradually reducing moisture content, suitable for humid tropical climates.
Drying efficiency exceeds 95%, preventing mold growth during storage.
05
Sprayinging System
A dual-nozzle coating system applies additives like astaxanthin and probiotics evenly onto the pellets, resulting in more balanced nutrition for the pellets and increased palatability in water.
The precise and controllable spraying process ensures consistent quality across every batch.
06
Cooling & Screening System
After spraying, the feed is cooled to room temperature to prevent oil oxidation.
Then, it is sieved to remove powder and substandard pellets. The sieved powder is recycled, reducing waste.
07
Packaging System
The final product is weighed, bagged, and sealed. Packaging specifications can be flexibly customized according to the clients’ market conditions.
Each bag of feed undergoes metal detection and inkjet coding to ensure product safety and traceability.

Client evaluation and project operation status
Recently, our after-sales department received feedback from the technical manager of this shrimp feed factory:
“We’ve been in the feed and farming business for many years, and we’re very particular about the quality of our shrimp feed. We used to rely on imported feed — the quality was good, but it was expensive, slow to arrive, and not always stable.
The 5-ton-per-hour shrimp feed plant RICHI built for us was really designed around our local conditions. They even helped us make use of local by-products like banana stem powder, which cuts costs and gives us an “eco-feed” label that’s more attractive in the export market.
The process has also solved a big problem for us — now the feed stays stable in water for up to two hours, so there’s less waste and the ponds stay cleaner.
Changing pellet sizes is easy too, no need to stock multiple types of feed.
The 5-ton capacity perfectly meets the needs of our three farming sites, keeping feed fresher and more consistent in quality. On the environmental side, dust and wastewater treatment systems fully meet local standards without any extra modifications.
Overall, this project wasn’t just about building a feed factory — it really connected the whole chain from raw materials to feed to farming, which made a big difference in cost control and production efficiency.”

Ecuador Shrimp Feed Mill: Value and Trend
The main value of this mill is providing local farmers and shrimp companies with feed that leads to more stable water quality and better growth for their shrimp.
At the same time, it’s exploring new ways to improve. For example, they are looking at using local alternative ingredients like insect protein to lower costs even further. They also plan to use a digital management system to give partner farmers more precise feeding advice. These innovations will be key to the factory’s future competitiveness.
